How to get out of a Spiritual Slump

posted in: Life, Uncategorized 0

Slumps are perfectly normal {even in our Spiritual life}, don’t be ashamed or embarrassed! We’ve all been there. Sometimes you just don’t feel like doing your devotions, reading the Bible or even praying {gasp!} Me too, I get it!

Admitting there is a problem or disconnect is the first step, but here are 10 things I do when I’m just not feeling it.

1. Confess your apathy and ask God for direction, then obey- do whatever he asks of you.

2. Start a study or prayer group with others. Sometimes a little accountability is all you need.

3. Make it a priority and schedule it into your day. I know you are busy and have a ton on your plate. We all do. But, spending time with God gets the rest of the day in order. You may be surprised at how much more you accomplish after putting Him first.

4. Try a new devotional book. There are great books that focus on many different hobbies or interests… gardening, coaching, art. What are you into? So is God 😉

5. Move! Try a different chair or room. Go outside! I love when the weather gets warmer and I can sit out on the porch for my quiet time.

6. Add something tangible. It is easy to forget that God is always with us. When I am having trouble remembering that, I find a reminder… light a candle, pull up an empty chair (for Jesus), or my favorite- a handheld cross my parents brought back from Israel.

7. Start with worship music. There is nothing like a great song to get you in the mood to spend time with God. I highly recommend this one!

8. Start a list of all God has done or the ways He has answered your prayers. We recently did this with my Mom’s In Prayer group. On slips of paper, we wrote all the answers to prayer we received this past year and put them into a mason jar. It was so uplifting to talk and hear about the way God was responding to us and to see the paper filling the jar.

9. Try a different version of the Bible. If you are used to one version, mix it up and try another. Each version of the Bible is a little different and you may find old well known verses have new life.

10. Do something for someone else. Thinking about someone other than yourself may give you a new look on life. Try volunteering or a few random acts of kindness.

What about you?

I would love to hear your ideas of how you change things up and bring excitement into your Spiritual life.

Hugs and Abundant Blessings,
